POSITION SUMMARY:
The Personal Lines Underwriting Manager exercises direct supervision over the Personal Lines Underwriting team for assigned territory. They are responsible for all underwriting activities of this team, including file reviews, training materials and workflow reviews. The Underwriting Manager assists underwriters in analysis of more complex accounts and the work involves a wide range of responsibility for underwriting authority and processes. They work with the Personal Lines Product and Operations teams to improve products and bring new products to market. The position requires exercising judgment in handling daily supervisory functions and in identifying issues for further evaluation and management to comply with company policies and guidelines and to meet the objectives of the Personal Lines Department.
The Personal Lines Underwriting Manager evaluates state level business opportunities, recommends course of action, and executes the plan. The position requires project management experience, a broad knowledge of personal lines underwriting and systems, as well as demonstrated leadership capability. The Underwriting Manager serves as a qualified spokesperson on behalf of the company and presents the company’s Personal Lines products, practices and vision to multiple audiences including independent insurance agents.
This position currently follows a hybrid work schedule, with in-office days on Mondays & Tuesdays.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Underwriting Management:
Establishes and adheres to Personal Lines underwriting standards and guidelines.
Sets goals and objectives for assigned territory, develops and executes plans to achieve those goals and monitors the results.
Design, implement and manage new processes for Personal Lines Underwriting as needed to assure continued efficient underwriting of business.
Meets with agents to identify Personal Lines production opportunities, assist in agency training, and identify strengths and weaknesses in the Personal Lines programs which can provide for enhanced new business activity.
Monitors daily workflow- prioritizes assignments to specific staff, incorporating rushes while utilizing all staff.
Identifies service backlogs, determines and implements workflow changes to relieve delays.
Completes quality reviews of underwriting files to identify and address any trends or training needs of the unit or individuals.
Establishes and conducts team meetings for informational, training and problem solving objectives.
Identifies system problems, inaccuracies or inadequacies to help improve processes and efficiencies.
Identifies and writes underwriting guidelines for internal use and agency programs.
Participate in determination of rates, appetite and distribution for all Personal Lines territories.

- Partner with Patrons Oxford leaders and senior staff to establish overall process by which Personal Lines team members are developed to ensure competency /skill development and business continuity through staff succession planning. Work with Human Resources and management to ensure that competency and skill based staff development plans with clear progression milestones are created and progress is regularly reviewed by leadership team.
- Evaluate performance objectives and individual employee performance for improvement and complete annual performance reviews.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION:
Bachelors Degree or equivalent experience in the insurance field
Professional designation of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter is preferred
EXPERIENCE:
5-10 years experience in Property Casualty Insurance.

Must be able to analyze complex information and communicate decisions

Ability to work with data and analyze performance and manage risk within assigned territory
Knowledge of PC applications including Microsoft Office Suite

Organizational skills to coordinate functions of the underwriting activities of internal staff as well as development of agency underwriting manuals and on line system rules/ edits
Interpersonal skills in working with department staff, as well as other departments and agent customers and outside vendors in recognizing needs and priorities appropriate to resolve issues and achieve company objectives
